d-netz, sorry that I couldn’t respond sooner. I see what you mean about the unstable, dynamic nature of the power relations. F.’s example in the same paragraph of the shift from doctor-parent over the problematization of the child’s sexuality ulti...

Well, he probably needed the first three chapters as preliminaries to situate himself in the context of the debates around sexuality and repression that were going on at the time. After all, this was just a few years after 1968 and there was a ver...

Robert, I would read this differently. Just before the sentence in question (you omitted this), he explains that the types of power relations we tend to accept as given and universal are just 'snapshots' of a very dynamic process of changing distr...

F., in his fourth rule, Rule of the tactical polyvalence of discourse (p.100), states, “ Indeed, it is in discourses that power and knowledge are joined together.” I’m wondering if this statement demonstrates how F.’s work in Archaeology and Genea...

Question: F., in his second rule, Rules of continual variations (p. 99) he states, “W must not look for who has the power in the order of sexuality…and who is deprived of it…nor for who has the right to know and who is forced to remain ignorant. W...

In some ways, I think Foucault wrote The History of Sexuality v.1 backwards. The book makes more sense to me if Part 4: The Deployment of Sexuality was written first because it explains Foucault’s concept of power. Then I would include Part 5: The...

hello, Well, we should be done reading the whole book, The History of Sexuality v.1. Please feel free to ask your questions, share your connections, and discuss the readings. I look forward to the conversation.

Hi Robert

Why not just start the discussion on HOS in the forum or the blogs and see whether anybody joins in? Or alternately you could start another moderated small group like the Writing group just to discuss the book.

In my experience the only way to get these things going is to start yourself and hope something happens! It is usually quite hard to get people to join in. I have found this frustrating over the years and it is why I have set up two websites and a blog - so at least I could say what I want even if nobody else wanted to join in

Hi Robert, I'm back home now and back in winter after lovely weather at QI. Many ideas to follow up after the conference. It was great to meet you there, Susanne

Hi Robert

Unfortunately I don't have time at present to respond properly to Kole's comment. I have instead referred him to the Foucault email discussion list http://www.foucault.info/Foucault-L/

Hi Robert

At present I have set the privacy options for the network as open to the world. But there is an option to create private groups where the content is only viewable by members. The info from the Ning help page is included below. David's Foucault and Marxism group is not open to the world for example.

Perhaps either you or I could start a new moderated group specifically for sharing writing? That would be a great idea actually! Let me know what you think. If you want to send me a private message about this, click on send a message in the left hand column on my profile page. Private messages can be read by clicking on inbox in the right hand column.

Online peer reviewed journals - I started one of those (Foucault Studies) and I must say it is a lot of work - particularly without funding - but who knows perhaps there are ways of finding funding!

Can I create a private group?

Absolutely. Groups can be public (any member of the network can see the group, join the group and post content) or private (only approved network members can join the group and post content). This option is chosen during the setup process when you create your group. If your group is private, non-members will be able to see basic group information — like the group's name and image, the number of members and date of latest activity — but they will not be able to see who is a member of the group or any of the content that has been added.

Professor Nava,

Thank you for your comment on my discussion.
I left a bit of a reply for you.
I was wondering if you could look at it and tell me what you thought? As in, if my objections to certain points by Montag are valid?
Thanks!
